TRUFORM is ATIs implementation of Higher Order Surface technology. What it basically does is add more triangles to the polygons of 3D models and terrain, thus creating a smoother appearance. The two images on the right link to separate pages that show what Truform can do in games that are written or patched to take advantage of it. The first demonstrates Truform's effect on the Allied sniper rifle in the Half-Life mod Day of Defeat (Truform should work with all Half-Life mods), and the second demonstrates the effect on character models in the shooter Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
The Radeon 9700 Pro includes the next step in the evolution of Truform, cleverly dubbed TRUFORM II. Rather than being limited to fixed Integer based tessellation levels as with the original Truform, Truform II can now use floating point fractional based levels for even smoother tessellation. Also supported is an adaptive tessellation option. Think of it as mip mapping for Higher Order Surface technology. The farther away an object is, the less tessellation it will receive. Nearby objects will receive more polygons while more distant ones will receive less, thus increasing performance while maintaining visual quality. Unfortunately, what with Truform II being so new, there aren't yet any games I can use to demonstrate it.
It's not 100% certain but it seems that TruformII is not done completly in hardware on the 9700 Pro. It's either a hardware thing in which case there's no fixing it, or it might be that the 9700 Pro needs DX9 drivers to make Truform work right. Not being done in hardware would certainly explain the performance hits people are seeing when comparing Truform numbers to that on the 8500, which does Truform 100% in hardware.
