GT200 is GeForce GTX 280
Nvidia has dared to make a drastic move in its naming convention. According to several sources close to the company, the new flagship chip codenamed GT200 and D10U-30 and D10U-20 will end up with Geforce GTX 280 brand for the faster card.
There will be one more branded as Geforce GTX 260 and this would be the one that many believed will be branded as Geforce 9900GT.
The launch is scheduled for the 25th week of the year and it should take place between 16th and 20th of June. The name comes after Roy Tailor the Vice President of The way its meant to be played said that Nvidia’s names got a bit to complicated.
We remember that John Byrne, Vice president of graphics, said the same as ATI lost its XT and PRO suffixes in its names. We believe that Nvidia learned from ATI that this actually did help and therefore they are doing the same, the bigger number means better, at east in their three digit brands.
After several sources leaked some pictures of the GT200, HKEPC reports about the final name. According to this the GT200 GTX will be called "GeForce GTX 280" and the GTS version "GeForce GTX 260".

The new GTX
It looks like the GT200 or D10U card will sell for US$499 and it will be the perfect replacement for the Geforce 9800GTX. We are not sure about the name but many people have suggested the Geforce 9900GTX and GT brands, but we are not sure if these really will be the final names.
The cards based on the GT200 will sell for $499 and the cards are sampled and work well. Nvidia plans to show the cards to journalists in the last week of May and it’s highly likely to see the launch in June, with retail availability.
It will be fun to see if the GT200 will end up faster than the GX2 and if this single big chip can actually beat a dual chip card. We have a feeling it should.
Expensive but safe strategy
From what we know, Nvidia has placed orders for 65nm and 55nm versions of the GT200 chip and there is a big reason why. Nvidia is simply playing it safe and it doesn’t want any delays.
Nvidia traditionally migrates from bigger transistors to smaller in the entry level, less complicated chips and then tries this in the higher end. Usually this works well and you can remember that Nvidia went from 80nm to 65nm in this order.
As it’s pressured by time it will try to make even its biggest chip in 55nm. If it fails, it will have a 65 nm version of the chip ready to take its place. 55nm means that the chips will run a bit cooler and that you can crack the clocks a bit higher and we will probably learn if the fastest version of GT200 will end up at 55nm.
Taping out two chips means doubling the cost and this will likely increase Nvidia's operating cost, but at least it will help the company to keep up in the high end market.
It might happen that GTX version of GT200 is 55nm and that GT version ends up as 65nm but this is something that is yet to be confirmed. Nvidia simply cannot make any mistakes as this is the most critical time for the company in a while.

A secondary source has told us some interesting bits about the upcoming GeForce 9900GTX, a card which will be based on the GT200 chip. We provided you with quite a lot of information last month, and the second source confirms pretty much all of it. The only real difference is that GT200 will be the heart of the GeFoce 9900 series, which was confirmed earlier. The source confirms 240 shader processors, 32 ROPS, and a 512-bit memory controller. This means that the high-end card will sport 1GB GDDR3 memory.
He also said that the card will require power from both a 6-pin and an 8-pin PCIe power connector, which is far from surprising as we're hearing that the chip has 240W TDP.

GT200 becomes GeForce 9900 series, dual-core action
Several sources are reporting on the upcoming GT200 core from NVIDIA, which will be named GeForce 9900. The stories don't match though, when it comes to the specifics. While Expreview claims that GT200 will become the 9900GX2 and 9900GTX, VR-Zone says GeForce 9900GTX and 9900GT. None of them are very specific when it comes to the exact specifications. A user over at Chiphell is though. He says that GT200 will in fact be a dual-core GPU based on the G9x architecture.
While we're certain that the GT200 is hot and will be a huge chip. It looks like it could very well be a dual-core GPU. The users says GT200 is really two G94 chips slapped together, which means that there is a total of 64TMUs, 32 ROPs and 128 shader processors. It would also result in 512-bit memory bus and more than 900 million transistors. Hot in every sense of the word.
Dual-core makes sense on a few points; GT200 is not a proper code-name for an NVIDIA core, but would sooner indicate something like a dual-core spin. The name GeForce 9900 series also points to that GT200 is another spin off the G9x architecture, and not a true next generation architecture.
The launch date is suppose to be early Q2.
Alas, apparently still no DirectX 10.1 support.
