    So why do we see ''kilobyte'' being used with a value of 1024 bytes?

    Unfortunately, the computer industry has chosen to ignore International Standards and redefined the SI prefixes ''kilo'' to equal 1024, ''mega'' to equal 1024 * 1024 = 1,048,576 and ''giga'' to equal 1024 * 1024 * 1024 = 1,073,741,824

    [...]

    New prefixes were introduced in 1998 to sort out this mess. kibi-, mebi- and gibi- and their letter symbols Ki, Mi and Gi are used when referring to numbers which are powers of ''2''.

    kilobyte = 1000 bytes
    megabyte = 1,000,000 bytes
    gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes

    Kibytes = 1024 bytes
    Mebytes = 1,048,576 bytes
    Gibytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes
