Sony Ericsson W980 - music that divides

On the soft back the internal memory capacity is printed in embossed letters, but the camera is here too and it couldn’t have been placed in a worse place. Ten out ten times we’ll have our fingers on the picture, I have to congratulate the designers in charge of ergonomics.

After opening the phone one used to the usual Sony Ericsson design might be shocked: the interior looks rather new. It’s possible that the designer of the keypad had a (One? At least six!) pair of compasses stick in his nose and so he couldn’t imagine any other shape than circles.

The users will decide if this is esthetic or not. But the layout works, that’s sure, we have well-separated, soft buttons and although our bustling fingertips (and thus I have created a real image for an unfairly ignored body part) have to go on a long path, but everything is at its place, it works and it’s logical. No matter that it seems at first that the three navigation buttons are too crammed up, we shouldn’t be afraid, not even our thick-fingered fellow citizens will have any problems with it.

When opened there is an interesting stair formed between the display and the keypad, but since there are no buttons on the cover’s interior, this might only look strange. The 2.2” QVGA display fills out the space quite nice, only the small lens of the secondary camera can be seen above it. The speaker has somewhat slid to the side, which is okay, but I had no idea where does our voice get inside the phone, as there is no visible gap on the bottom of the case. It might get teleported inside, but no matter what happens it’s not very effective as more than usual people have asked what am I saying: they couldn’t hear me well. I tried to cover the bottom of the handset with my little hands and I have come to the conclusion that the microphone is in the hole below the Walkman button, which is uncomfortable during left-handed talk, but ideal for right-handed people.
