Sony Ericsson W980 - music that divides

The current ace of Walkman phones has been launched after the premiere in February. It's strange.

Music

There is some innovation in music, finally. The Walkman software basically works the same way as it did on previous handsets, we can group tracks by ID3 tags, there is repeat and shuffle playback, and it of course runs in the background. We can get back to the playlist with the up-down arrows and the left-right keys skip tracks. If the software is running in the background the wallpaper is animated both on the external and on the internal display. The glass-like end of the cover blinks in red to the rhythm of the music.

The first change affected the equalizer: we can tamper with the bands on a completely new interface. We can create our own custom presets, there are predefined ones too, but the previous MegaBass feature is now called Clear Bass and its power can be set in four steps. The background can be black or white and instead of the album cover there are some visual effects to create a mood. The player can work in landscape mode too, but this doesn’t have much meaning on a clamshell phone.

The other new feature is the FM transmitter, which I have tried first on Nokia N78, but my colleague Bocha has been playing around with such a thing on E-TEN X650 too. It would have been a great time to compare W980’s performance with these two, but there has been a small problem. After I have set the frequency that I tuned to on the radio I wanted to click on Start, but instead of the awaited sounds I only got a message stating that at my current location this service is banned, due to local laws.

Hmm? What? Okay, this is really true. But – and excuse me – if it’s possible I’d like to decide if I want to start this incredible infringement of the law or not. It’s cool anyway: it can be sold, but not used. Still, I haven’t seen people taken away from their cars in chains because instead of the tape deck they have started using an FM transmitter.

We have the RDS-capable FM radio left that has built-in automatic station search, which works fine. As opposed to previous information it doesn’t work without a headset. If we take a look at the external display we can see that RDS info is displayed over there too, it’s great. And there’s another great, great positive thing left: the headset. It’s an earpiece type, the black-silver colors look great and the record button is also elegant (on the part that can be taken off). My favorite thing, however, is that we can connect the headset (or the data cable) to the charger, so we can charge the phone and for example listen to the radio in handsfree at the same time, It’s a dream of office workers, as the speaker is not bad, it’s something like medium performance.
