Introduction
When reviewing a Sony Ericsson from the W series we always think about the revived Walkman brand and the effect of the handsets related to it; we appreciate Sony Ericsson’s part in the process that now almost all manufacturers have a dedicated musical phone family, and we also meditate on the secret of the Japanese-Swedish manufacturer’s success.
Lately, however, the rating of the series has fallen back a bit. The original energy has diminished, there are tons of phones being launched under the Walkman brand and users have started missing the kind of brave innovation that made the first Walkman phone, W800i, known and successful.
Since then they’re just cleaning up, fine-tuning and try to separate these phones of all others, slowly but surely autofocus has also disappeared in order to let the Cyber-Shot sales thrive, but these now also have advanced music playback features but intentionally come without a good headset so they won’t kill the musical phones.
And this situation doesn’t seem to change. Here we have W980, which is the latest, the best, the most professional, the “most Walkman”, but this has no real camera either and its features have barely changed, but I have met flaws one after the other, while basically I have quite liked it after four days of use.
