Menu
The phone can be turned on with the dedicated power button; this is in the bottom right, below the stack of navigation bubbles. Some animation and stuff like that, settings wizard and we can see that the menu system is exactly the same as on any other Walkman phone. There are themes, yeah, which can change the icons too, and recently it’s also a default thing that besides the list and grid views we have a roundabout-like menu graphics too, we can have a flash because in case of the normal layout the bottom three icons get reflected but that’s it. We have even seen the animated keypad lock and the icon of the silent mode already, but there are still some things to talk about and these are the functions that are active when the phone is closed.
If the keys are not locked on the closed phone then after closing the cover the external embossed areas get lit and we get five touchkeys that control the musical functions. We can check our own music and this is where we can access the tracks grouped by different criteria, we can start and seek playback. W980 gives some slight shake feedback for touches, it’s very easy to use, but if we don’t want some music to be played in our pockets in some unwanted moment then we should lock the keypad with the slider. The surface is very sensitive, the player tends to launch at the slightest touch.
After closing the phone we always get in the Walkman menu and this can be switched to the radio with the button on the side. In this case white arrows get lit instead of the red buttons, these help us in selecting radio stations. After another switch we get to see the screen with basic information, but no matter we keep tapping the cover (and the phone keeps shaking), we can’t do anything extra. This is a pity, as for example we can see a message’s sender and part of the SMS on the small screen, but we can’t scroll down to read all of it without opening the phone. Displaying the call log here would be another wise thing.
On the external screen – which is lit – there is a Walkman logo moving around. I’ve first thought that this is random, but I have noticed that its position matches the phone’s rotation. Hmm, this means there is a motion sensor in side, so in the media menu picture’s get rotated and there are some applications based on this feature.
