Samsung G810 - robust

Camera

In our review of mobile phones’ cameras we have analyzed G800’s camera in detail, so I was very curious about the image sensor’s quality in the Symbian phone. Well, I’m completely satisfied, evolution is evident.

The physical parameters didn’t change: 5 megapixel image sensor, 3X optical zoom, Xenon flash. The highest resolution for photos is 2560 x 1920 pixels, and 640 x 480 for videos. The test video, demonstrating the camcorder’s quality, can be downloaded here (9 MB, mp4 format).

We can alter lots of settings before taking a picture. Sensitivity can be set between ISO 50 and ISO 800, JPEG compression can be set in three steps, there is a software picture stabilizer, face recognition focus and we can select pre-flashing for red-eye reduction. There are thirteen preset modes, light metering can be set to matrix, center weighted or spot. We can take panorama pictures too with G810, but image sequencing is only available at VGA resolution. Exposure-correction can be set between +/- 2 exposure values, and it can be set in 0.5 steps. Just like in most Symbian phones we can set edge sharpness or turn off camera sounds. We can increase the dynamics range from the software, but its effect is questionable, I think that the resulting picture were worse. Pictures are almost always larger than 2 MB.

Pictures taken with G810 are of an exceptional quality. Noise filtering is minimal, so although we get some picture noise even at a low sensitivity, but it’s not significant. In wide angle there is some rim obscuration, but edge sharpness is perfect. In tele mode this flaw is not visible, but in this case pictures are much softer and noise level also increases – probably the software sets a higher sensitivity in this case, as the lens power is only 1:6.8 at maximum zoom. Macro images are of an exceptional quality, the phone takes good pictures even in darkness, but the Xenon flash is disappointing. It works differently in the same situations, it sometimes over- or underexposes the pictures – you can see this on the last two pictures. It is great, however, that there is an AF light to help focusing in poor lighting conditions.
