Phone calls, messaging, organizer, data transfer
I will just shortly cover the topics mentioned in the page title, as there are detailed infos available in the Series 60 review I have mentioned. The phonebook is the one we could have seen in such devices, it is completely dynamic, meaning that the only limit to the amount of data stored is the size of the internal memory, and extra fields can be created by the user too. Everything was all right during phone calls, it had no problems with GSM/UMTS switching either, and sound volume and quality were also okay.
There are proper messaging features too in the operating system. It supports multimedia messages and e-mails, authenticated IMAP servers being also supported. The web browser is still superb – yes, G810 also has the one with minimap, so browsing is an experience even on a screen of such a size.
Organizer functions are also perfect. The alarm clock rings even when the phone is turned off, we can enable repetitions, and there is snooze. In the calendar we can choose month/week/day view, we can have four types of entries (meeting, memo, holiday, task), all of which can be timed and we can also choose the alarm tone. The calculator has basic functions; the converter supports units and currencies too. There is a PDF reader included and QuickOffice is also here, so we can view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files too.
The GSM module is tri-banded (900/1800/1900 MHz), but G810 supports third generation networks too; we can also use HSDPA for data transfer. If we don’t want to pay an extra fee for using the internet, then we can use WiFi, which is 802.11b/g-compatible. The Bluetooth module’s version number is 2.0 and it supports stereo sound transfer. The handset has a built-in GPS receiver, but as there was no navigational software I couldn’t test this one, but it’s sure that it connects damn slowly to satellites.
