Let’s start by getting to know the calendar, which is capable of month, week and day graphical views, the day view is a list of time points. The events can fall into one of the following categories: meeting, anniversary, holiday, important and private. The software tells us if there is a conflict, but it doesn’t show that graphically. An entry can repeat daily, weekly, monthly and yearly and furthermore we can define an end date. So for example the meeting about our Christmas game can repeat in December on every week, but in January the appointment will disappear from the calendar. The memory is shared, just as usual: we can store 100 appointments, 50-50 anniversaries and holidays, 20 important and 20 private events.
The alarm clock is in a separate submenu and it can handle five different points in time. Every one of them can repeat on specific days, the snooze can be configured too, but it has a maximum of 10 minutes (which is enough by the way). I have been overjoyed to discover the RSS reader amongst the applications, which has been part of the Sony Ericsson phones’ software for quite a lot of time, and it is highly useful to read fresh news and things like that at once (for a little self-ad, Mobilarena has it’s own RSS feed too) when on the road, we just have to take care of disabling it before a foreign trip, or we will have a huge roaming invoice to be taken care of.
For a reason unknown by me, the cool little world clock with a map has disappeared from recent Samsung handsets, this model too has only a simple list of set cities. The notepad is simple as the wheel and the calculator won’t dazzle us with extra functions either. The stopwatch and the countdown timer are the usual; the converter will convert between all standard units of measurement, the clothes sizes, shoe sizes and other bullshit don’t appear on the list.
A huge plus point goes to the G800 for its document handling. The incredibly slow PicselView forced until now has been replaced at last with a software developed by Acces, which is on one hand faster and on the other hand it is compatible with every MS Office document format and PDF files, we can easily zoom, rotate, navigate and the 1 MB large PDF file has been opened in a flash. Of course rotating it took a while, but I still say that it has a nice performance in the category of non-smart phones. Of course PDF handling is read-only, but I didn’t expect anything else. What is strange however, that the software cannot be accessed through the menus, we only meet it when we want to open a PDF file, so the user won’t know about it’s existence until he puts such a file on his phone.
