Nokia N95 8GB - bigger, better?

The “wave” of changes has affected the battery too. Not surprisingly the battery pack codenamed BL-5F has been replaced with the one named BL-6F. This, instead of the previous one’s 950 mAh capacity, makes the phone function at 1200 mAh, which is definitely needed by the larger display. Theoretically the stand-by and talk times have also increased, but according to my personal experience the N95 8GB gave up the fight too after two days, so don’t expect any miracles.

There has been some minor changes regarding the GPS, as now the little gadget supports A-GPS too, which in turn would need support from the cellular network, but this is officially unavailable in Hungary. The map software is still based on the database provided by TeleAtlas which is functional on approximately 40% of Hungary’s territory, which is exactly insufficient for what I would be using it (finding unknown country addresses). It is necessary to mention, however, that the N95 8GB finds satellite signal much faster and reliable than the previous version did. If Hungary’s map turns out to be expanded, than the phone would become quite a useful little navigator.

I think we explored the differences, so it’s time for conclusions. A part of the previous model’s flaws have been corrected. Regarding material quality the guys over in Finland took care only of the back cover (the N95 8GB received a plastic soft to the feel) and the wobble remained (although it’s not as serious as in the case of the first N95 we tested). The lens did not change, the camera’s software might have changed a bit, but in turn we can say goodbye to the lens cover. The display is larger, which is welcome, but in fact this is the element no one had problems with; the structure of the multimedia menu has also changed, the battery has more capacity and the GPS seems better. These are small things, but definitely not useless.

But. Regrettably the phone still can’t be charged through the mini USB cable. The 8 gigs capacity is very useful, but the lack of expandability is much to regret (although according to all sources this is a victim of the Symbian system which handles the 8 GB storage space as some kind of memory card, but there can be only one of these). If only a very little bit, but still, according to the tests, the N95 8GB is slower, although this cannot be felt during normal everyday usage. The front plastic cover still doesn’t fit to such a high end Nokia; it’s time to learn from the G800 how this can be solved from metal.

If I would have an own N95, I wouldn’t change it. But if I would have to buy one now (which is completely impossible in my case, but let’s not take this into consideration), then I would consider the purchase carefully, as the N95 8GB is fairly expensive for the time being, but the old top phone’s price will soon start to decrease rapidly, so the difference in quality won’t necessarily be a reason for the difference in price. Because of its price it still won’t get a recommended seal (and because of the fact that exactly those problems remained unsolved which would have been important for me), so it remains:
