Nokia N95 8GB - bigger, better?

Multimedia changes

Refashioning the multimedia functions brought about some exterior changes too. The buttons appearing when the cover is slid down are now lit in white, not blue. Relating to software the changes are much more evident: the old N95, upon pressing the multimedia button right of the navigation square, popped up a separate menu (accompanied by a spectacular animation) including practically all the stuff related to multimedia. Well, this is now gone.

We have a completely new interface here: the music, the videos, the albums, the web bookmarks and (new! nouveau! nuvo! neu! új!) the squares representing the list of podcasts change each other upon pressing the horizontal button. This is positive in means that inside these squares the functions of the respective category can be accessed immediately and furthermore this is a much faster mode of display than the predecessor’s feature.

The music player itself does not have any new features; the buttons look a bit different, de functions did not change at all. The software lists the music tracks by the same properties; I didn’t find any difference in sound quality either (neither with an earphone nor without one).

Of course trying the camera also was an important task on our to-do list. Before beginning the analysis of pictures taken with it, there is something worth to mention as an advantage. The new N95 takes the picture practically immediately after pressing the exposure button as opposed to its predecessor, which needed a steady hand as it took some time to expose. This is a clever improvement, thank you.

The pictures themselves… well, first let’s see 2-2 pictures taken with the old (on the left) and then with the new (on the right) phone. As we can see there are differences, but I still wouldn’t say that there has been progress. After the old N95’s “classically” blurred (muhaha) pictures the new model tries to minimize the blur in the noisy parts, but this way the picture becomes coarse, as it would be ready to fall apart. Subjectively I would still choose the new one, for me it is much more photo-realistic, that’s for sure, but it still can’t hold a candle to the creations of the Samsung G600.
