Menu changes
There are no changes regarding the phonebook and message handling; we have written plenty about these not just in the case of N95 but also at other Symbian phones. The menu system, however, has been a bit modified by the designers. Of course we have everything from the old model, just in a different order: the applications found their place in different folders, something I find senseless. There are some novelties however.
Let’s start with the change that is immediately observable in the main menu: the Office part has been moved under the Applications menu, and it’s place has been taken by an N-Gage logo: the games can be found here. And why N-Gage? Because the new gaming platform won’t work only on N-Gage phones (if there will be any N-Gage model), but also on every newer Symbian phone. I know that this has been characteristic already, but this is the official situation now, so let’s take a look at what does this icon has to offer.
Well, after a cool little animation we can find two demo version games over here. One of them is the Asphalt 3 (hmm-hmm, this isn’t really a new development), and the other is the FIFA ’07 which, being so close to the year 2008, isn’t really new either. However both of these games are all right (Gameloft products) and of course the software offers us the possibility of downloading the full version of the games, there is nothing surprising in this.
Another new menu item is the Video Central, which is not such a hot shot as it name would suggest. Entering here a submenu consisting of four icons welcomes the user, which icons are spinning around. Three out four icons wants to take us immediately to the Internet, to download videos from there (YouTube videos are also viewable); the only function working without a net connection is the one named My Videos, where the thumbnails of our own recorded and factory-included videos are sitting in a circle. Clicking on them doesn’t do anything extra; RealPlayer fires up and starts playing the video.
There are no other major changes. The contents of the Utilities and Applications folders’ have been moved around a bit; the location of the Office directory has been somewhat modified too, saying that the structure is now more logical, but basically it doesn’t really matter: this won’t make the new N95 better than its predecessor.
