Exterior changes
The changes can be concluded in two words: it’s larger and it’s black. Although the plain N95 isn’t a small piece of hardware either, the new model got even a bit larger. This – in my opinion – has only one reason, which can be observed at the first glance, specifically that although the display is larger, the resolution did not change. The display looks really huge near an N80, although that has a resolution of 416x352 and I think it’s useless to say how much does that count in picture quality. On its own the screen of the N95 8GB is fascinatingly large, bright and has great contrast. After a bit more thorough examination it turns out that although the display got larger, the phone itself didn’t really increase in size. The reason for this is that the cover of the original N95 did not reach out to the sides of the phone’s casing which has been now adjusted, and the price of this horizontal increase is that the function buttons of the N95 8GB now have a more stretched out shape. The D-pad for example now separates the pencil and delete buttons, but this does not prove to be a disadvantage in means of usability.
The question really is that why was it necessary to increase the display’s size? Were there any complaints? Someone felt it small? I could have chosen other things that needed a fix. I don’t say that this is a problem; the larger screen is always useful. What I think of as a defect however is that the memory card slot has disappeared. Since the internal memory size is 8 gigabytes the guys over in Finland felt that expandability is unnecessary. I know that the Sony Ericsson W960i is non-expandable for the same reason, but this is still something wrong. (By the way this has system-wide reasons.) I also know that I have special needs, as the memory card is an unbelievably useful accessory during testing: I have a 64 MB module with a whole bunch of videos, music, documents and I just put this in the reviewed phone and I can immediately note what it can open and what types it can’t. Of course the average user sends data through USB, but in case of moving large amounts of information, when there is no PC nearby, the memory card can come in handy.
Looking at the exterior there are some other changes too. In my opinion I also consider it a drawback that the rear camera’s lenses aren’t protected by anything. This isn’t interesting only because the dirt affects the lenses but the cover would have a role in starting taking pictures. At the old N95 opening the camera’s cover automatically started the camera application and now to achieve this we also have to unlock the keypad too if we would like to take photos in the phone’s closed state. And we would definitely like to.
The first thing everybody looked at was that if the quality of the assembly had changed. I report: it didn’t. The cover is made from the same plastic that can be moved at least 1-2 millimeters sideways in any position. I know: here is the place for criticism saying that such a large surface, that besides moves in two directions, cannot be fastened any better. However I advise the unbelieving ones to take a look at the almost same sized Samsung G800; or if the possibility of two-way sliding is important, than an examination of the i450 from the same Korean manufacturer is advised. It must be admitted that this can be done better. The keypad however hasn’t changed a bit; I have already been satisfied with it on the N95 so there are no negative critics on this part against the new model. The back of the phone, however, received a softer cover which is very welcome.
