Summary
I’d like to dedicate a whole page to the summary, as 5800 is a milestone from many points of view. The Finnish manufacturer already had a touchscreen handset, 7710 was a huge failure at its time, but that has been more like a suitcase instead of a phone, while 6708 has been a Nokia only in its name, as it has been produced by BenQ.
5800 is on one hand Nokia’s answer to the iPhone, and on the other hand to the current trends. The Finnish guys didn’t really take up the razor-hype either, but they just can’t afford to have no phones on the touchscreen handsets. They have retreated from the megapixel-war too, but rumors say that it’s only temporary. Still, they have been working really hard on this handset, and this is visible. They have reconstructed the famous Series60 interface; they have been thinking how could they make all these features finger-controllable and the final product is not bad at all.
It’s not cheap either, it costs just as much as a SIM-free iPhone 3G. But the manufacturer goes for sure: they give lots of accessories for a phone, which basically has only four problems. It has no Office support, it cannot be charged on USB, the materials used are not worthy of such a phone and the scrolling routine needs some time to get used to. The design is a subjective thing, I don’t like this rim, but I have nothing against other parts, even though I don’t prefer “just-a-display” devices.
Based on all these, I think Nokia 5800 XpressMusic deserves this:
