Nokia 5800 - late, but great

Introduction

The iPhone-effect. Apple has launched only two phones, and not even at the same time, as one of them is the successor of the other, and they still had such an impact on the dull world of mobile handsets that the waves have reached all large manufacturers. There have been touchscreen phones before, it’s not this that has been the big deal. But the fact that this time they have made it without any kind of stylus or tricks, with finger-controlling and lacking any slowdowns, unnecessary complications.

The others had to react. The first to bring out an answer have been the Koreans, Samsung and LG have started manufacturing touchscreen phone, but not because of the iPhone. But after Apple came out with their own handset, they have visibly accelerated these kinds of developments, and let’s just mention the most important ones: they have launched LG Prada and Samsung Omnia. HTC presented the Touch series, almost all of them being great, but Sony Ericsson has been suffering with the UIQ system, and the Windows wonder-phone called X1 hasn’t been such a wonder.

Nokia has been slow in covering this topic, like a Tie Bomber. It’s hard to navigate such a large empire, they have been doing well with fine-tuning the Series60 platform, in a coffee break they’ve put together an alarm clock supporting multiple alarms, so they haven’t been struggling too much. Symbian phones still had large sales, it has been a mature, stable and reliable system, they have used a 369 MHz Freescale CPU with it, added all kinds of cases and that’s it.

But they had to do something as well. So they’ve taken up work, took their time, but here’s 5800 – which we received from XXL GSM –, being the first phone to use the touch-controlled interface of the Series 60 platform, but this is not the only thing why it’s important. The other major fact is that the system didn’t appear in the company’s most expensive phone at first, and so Nokia shows us that they consider that the fifth generation of S60 can be the operating system of mid-range handsets as well. They have redesigned the interface quite a lot, so it’s time to take a closer look.
