GPS, data transfer
The handset has a GPS receiver and it comes with Nokia Maps. It has some meaning on such a display, although the screen didn’t rotate, so we have to stick with portrait view. The phone found the satellites pretty fast and the connection was stable, and if there’s no connection it can rely on cell information. The phone we have been testing had no maps, it downloaded everything from the internet, which generated a traffic of 4 megabytes, and I didn’t even navigate, I’ve just checked my current position in a satellite view. We still have to pay for voice navigation, the price is 99 euros/year for European functionality.
Data transfer features are complete, we have GPRS, EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA support, not mentioning the WLAN receiver, the phone can make video calls as well. The built-in browser is rather pleasant at this resolution, scrolling is good, but I’ve been missing the zoom feature from iPhone and Opera Mobile 9.5. Of course it can work in landscape view as well, it’s fast and it can display everything, which includes YouTube videos. Bookmarks include social networking links by default, staring with Nokia OVI, but we also have Facebook and MySpace as well, we can subscribe to Flickr from the phone, thus our pictures can be uploaded directly from the phone.
Bluetooth has been working perfectly and when attaching the microUSB cable we can choose between PC Suite mode or Mass Storage device mode. It doesn’t really matter as memory card and internal storage contents are accessible in both modes from the PC, copying data is extremely simple.
The battery is a bit weak for this display and such a set of features. Although the 1320 mAh doesn’t seem too bad, 5800 used up all energy in two days, which is normal, as one has to play with it continuously, just like with an iPhone. This is what makes it even worse that the phone won’t charge through the USB cable. I had the chance to measure talk time separately, when using 3G network 1.5 hours of talk drew the battery level to near zero.
