Display, multimedia
I’ve thought to write a couple of words about the display here, at the multimedia part, as it is somewhat connected to photography. I am very happy that finally the 240 x 320 pixels large displays have appeared in low- to mid-range handsets too. It is praiseworthy. Still, there are other things we have to miss due to cost reduction, like view angle, number of colors and refresh rate. Practically we can see the display only when face-to-face, but if there’s bright sunlight then not even this way. We’ll have problems from any other angle in any situation. The picture displayed is not sharp enough, it doesn’t have enough contrast, and animations are choppy. It’s quite hard to take a picture in these conditions.
The phone has a 1.3 megapixel camera with fixed focus. We’ll get to the end of settings quite fast, as besides image resolution there are no other configuration options. We can enable image sequencing and a self-timer or we can choose to record videos at a splendid resolution of 128 x 96 pixels (now that’s HD). The pictures are of a quality that makes them useful for sending in MMS or attaching to contacts in the address book. The phone has an internal memory of 12 MB and besides the default themes, sounds, images and applications there is about 7.5 MB left to use. This is enough for storing about 50 images at full resolution.
In musical terms the situation is not better either. Although the handset supports MP3 files, due to the amount of internal memory we can’t store many full-length tracks, we’d rather aim for having a couple of ringtones. Thus the music player is also quite plain; we shouldn’t be looking for an equalizer or something like that. There is, however, and FM radio, even though it has no RDS support. The headset functions as an antenna for the radio and provides a sound quality that’s enough for such tasks.
