The midget from the outside...
The adjective in the review’s title, in spite of its appearance, has a positive meaning, as the X600’s size is very correctly defined by the engineers. It’s just that small as to be still completely useable, but with its 136 g weight and 58 x 107 x 14.7 mm size it nicely slips into any pocket. It might be somewhat thinner, that would be even better, but it’s fine anyway.
We just have to look at the device to observe that it’s a glofiish, as the concept is the usual. The 2.8” QVGA display is surrounded by brushed metal plating which is not only beautiful, but also demanding. There is a bit of plastic on the cover though, which is similar to those used in previous models: soft and warm to touch. At the meeting point of the two materials we can find the phone speaker and two small status LEDs. On the bottom, just below the cool glofiish logo, we can find the controls which are made up of eight buttons and a small, but useable joystick. Below them there is a claret stripe, this is the continuation of the one from the sides of the phone. It’s interesting to note that E-TEN always puts a wild color on their handsets, just like at the camera of X800 – I like this very much.
The back of the phone hasn’t been worked on that much, this is the only part of the handset that I didn’t really like. There is no problem with the use of materials, the aforementioned soft, rubber-like plastic assures comfort, but the design elements… ahem. The camera’s lens is overly large for its resolution; there is a silver colored area around it, without any labels. On the right of it we can see the mirror used when making self-portraits, the flashlight and the huge speaker. On the bottom there is only a superficial Windows Mobile logo, thus the back of the phone gives the impression of a poor quality. It’s interesting that in order to remove the back cover, we first have to pull out the medium-sized, easily usable, telescopic stylus.
On top and on the two sides we can see the aforementioned claret – or to be trendier: techno-claret – stripe, this hides different things. On top right there is the power button, a bit lower we can find the camera’s exposition button, while on the bottom there is the miniUSB connector, the SDHC-compatible microSD slot and the microphone.
On top there is the GPS label, on its right we can find the fastening peg of the neck- or wristband. On the left the volume control buttons, a shortcut button, the reset gap and the 2.5 mm jack connector are placed.
