Japanese KDDI announced an ePaper display prototype for phone, which might come in handy at most when reading long texts. The 13.1" colored display, manufactured by Bridgestone, requires energy only to redraw screen contents, just like other eInk solutions, so it might be a comfortable solution for reading long texts and also one that requires much less energy than the tiny display of a phone. The prototype takes 12 seconds to refresh a whole page (strangely it uses the bit outdated IrDA technology), which seems rather slow. Of course if using a faster data transfer technology and display this value can be drastically decreased. It is not yet known if the device will ever be launched, but the large, colored electronic paper will surely be used in all kinds of eBook devices.
