The device has a 1.3 megapixel camera; highest available resolution is 1280 x 1024 pixels. Z555i can not record movies – I could start ranting about this, but to tell the truth I don’t miss useless, low-res video recording at all. I could describe picture quality with the adjective I like to use a lot: “average”, as there is powerful noise filtering, blurry, oil-painting like pictures, missing many details. The situation is not that grim, however, when compared to other phones in its category, even noise filtering is not as prominent as in many other phones, but it’s still present. The software can make image sequences, there is night mode and self-timer, we can alter white balance and jpeg compression amount, and we can set exposure correction in the +/-2 EV range in 1/3 steps.
The musical part is good, but even the name of the manufacturer is a warranty for this. The music player can run in the background, it has a five-band equalizer, but it can filter tracks only by artist. We can make up for this partially with the use of playlists, but that’s not the real thing. The factory headset’s quality is ok, sound quality is average when on loudspeaker. Of course there is an RDS-enabled FM radio; we need to plug in a headset to make it function.
The battery is a BST-39, with a capacity of 950 mAh. It’s the one from W380i, it’s not enough over there and somewhat good over here, as this is no musical phone. Of course if we listen a lot to music it won’t take it for more than two days, otherwise it might stay online for even three days.
Summary: Sony Ericsson Z555i is basically a good handset. It’s not exceptional in terms of features, but it can satisfy the needs of an average user. The design of the front is really spectacular, it’s a pity that there weren’t enough ideas for the other parts, but this way the whole phone is no kitsch. Although it’s not from the Walkman series, it’s still pretty good in music, it’s perfect for such things with a large memory card. I’m not content with its price, however: the network independent version is around 160 EUR. It won’t be recommended, but it’s cool in any case! I liked it.
