Introduction
It’s been renumbered. From now on Cyber-Shot phones will have their name start with C, and to celebrate the occasion, two new camera phones have been announced in Barcelona: C702 and C902. The other change in the naming scheme, that it doesn’t anymore have a trailing “i”, which didn’t have any meaning anyway; no other manufacturers use any additional sign to distinguish a device that is not produced for the Asian market.
We have managed to get hold of C702 for a review. Although I would have preferred the turquoise edition, but we finally got a black one, which is although not that prominent, but I’m sure that many customers will choose it for this reason. The phone is not only special because of its camera, but also because it is the first one in a long time to be a heavy-duty handset from the manufacturer: it’s not completely heavy-duty though, as the official specs do not describe it as being shockproof, only water- and dust resistant.
Ericsson R250 and R310 were the two phones of the Swedish manufacturer to be worthy of a timeless recognition for being extremely heavy duty. They took the “it can take anything” philosophy so seriously, that costs were quite above the usual, so no matter how professional the phones were, they became an economic failure. A great deal of time had to pass for them to become brave enough to develop a similar concept, but this time they learned from their earlier mistake, so C702 is only a kind of sporty model, like Siemens ME45, or Nokia 5140.
They weren’t saving on features however. Most of the sporty phones have quite a short list of functions (a typical recent example is Samsung M110), but C702 has a nice camera, a large display and built-in GPS. We didn’t have the opportunity of taking it off-road, like we did with M110 – maybe if it gets a bit cheaper…
