The shiny exterior
Today, when people are fanatic about being different from others, it’s quite simple to make a fashion phone that sells. Basically the extravagant exterior is what’s important; sales will be satisfactory if this is ok. Of course there are some other parameters that can be altered: if the phone is expensive, then it can be sold as a luxury article, if it’s cheap, then it can give more people a “similar experience”. It’s something like replicas at cars – it’s not a Ferrari, but other people are still staring at it. And it doesn’t even matter if the phone is beautiful or ugly, as people are going to buy it anyway.
Z555 is a member of the nice and cheap category. This is not bad from the point of view of success, but what’s even better is that although its exterior is prominent, it’s still not showy. The front has perpendicular stripes of different sizes on it, which have a different tilt angle with the horizon, meaning they refract light in a different way. Compared to Nokia’s triangles, Sony Ericsson preferred rhombuses (or more like squares rotated by 45 degrees); the camera and the loudspeaker both have this shape. Furthermore, the front cover has a tiny monochrome display, which is although nothing new, but looks very cool under the shiny surface, messages appearing here are very interesting; they almost look 3D.
The designers, however, weren’t working much on the back. It’s of a completely conventional, slightly rough plastic, there aren’t any rhombuses anywhere, and it lacks any kind of design. Well not any kind, as in the middle of the bottom part we can see a stripe, whose function I couldn’t figure out, and it’s not even close to being cool. It’s welcome, however, that in the lower corners there are rubber pegs, and the phone lies on this when put on a table.
There isn’t much stuff on the sides. The volume control buttons are on the right, while the connector of the charger and the headset are on the right, along with an M2 label, even though we can insert the memory card only after taking off the back.
Just as much the exterior of Z555i is unique, as plain is its interior. The “prisms” are gone when we open it up, everything’s insignificant. Probably the designers felt this, as they’ve put slanting stripes on the sides of the display, but this doesn’t help at all. The display has a diagonal of 1.9”, its resolution is 176 x 220 pixels; there are no problems with picture quality, but it’s very small, although there had been room for a larger screen. The buttons on the bottom have a shiny surface, there are large enough and so they are easy to use. There are three buttons under the navigation ring; the one in the middle is the power and profile changer button; the one on the left is the hotkey for the web browser, while the one on the right brings up the quick menu, in which we can see missed events and the application quickstart list that we can define.
