System and applications
The J750 is also based one the BlackUI menu system, unfortunately it uses the older version. In no way can we call it a fast one; it’s interesting that this menu system gets slower with time – usually the reverse of this process is specific for operating systems, this kind of procedure is more typical of humans. We can use one of the boring pictures as wallpaper for the standby screen. The main menu has a grid layout, has 12 icons and for a change we can find Google in the rightmost column. We can access the menu by pressing the central button of the navigation ring, so this at least won’t take us to the wap at last.
Let’s see what we’ve got. The size of the internal memory is 8 MB; this can be expanded with a microSD card. There are absolutely no games; the list of applications includes a notepad, task manger, sound recorder (max. 60 minutes), world clock, calculator, measure- and currency converter, countdown timer and a stopwatch. This list can be expanded thank to Java support. The calendar has month, week and day view; it can store 240 entries (100 meetings, 50-50 anniversaries and vacations, 20-20 important and private notes).
The possibility of sending an SOS message is an interesting feature. This means that we can define a few (maximum five) names, to whom the phone sends an SMS in case of an emergency; the text of this message cannot be modified. After defining the names, the contacts receive an SMS informing them that they are now on our list. After this we have to press one of the volume control buttons four times and then the phone sends the messages, automatically accepts the calls from the contacts on the emergency list and doesn’t start any application until we press the end call button (we can’t even access the menu until then). It’s a nice little feature, although sending the messages didn’t work for me, however everything else (announcement message, locked keypad, small siren icon) worked. To put it this way: if I really had been in trouble, the J750 wouldn’t have helped me – that’s nice…
