Organizer and games
The calendar, that has a separate menu, is a really big disappointment. It can display graphics only on the month view, which is a really amateur thing on a QVGA display. We can store 100 events, but there are no categories. But we can choose a repetitive alarm, wow. The alarm clock is better, it works even when the phone is turned off and it has quite a lot of settings, for example we can set the alarm type to match the currently selected environmental profile.
The calculator is a basic one; the stopwatch is no big deal either. The world clock is displayed as a large earth globe that can be rotated, which is rather spectacular, even more as I just can’t understand why did they have to use inverted colors. The earth is blue; the ocean is white, congrats. The unit converter handles the most used things easily; there is no problem with that. Although there is no separate menu for it, but KC550 supports Office document viewing, the software from Access is present here too, after lots of Samsung phones, which is of course no problem at all.
The games are also worth mentioning, as there are three types of fun stuff installed on the phone. Two of these are written in Java (these are quite lame), but the third one is an internal accessory of the phone. The reason for this is very simple: KC550 has a motion sensor, but Java games cannot make use of this, as opposed to the game they made. Let’s see the two Java-based ones: there is a skateboard-jumping thing, which is a bit too fast compared to the general speed of the phone (you can only fall in the middle of the pipe, although I have been trying very hard) and there is a sweet and nice and cute game where we can play six minigames, but none of them is interesting for more than three seconds.
But we also have M-toy. This also has six minigames, but this motion-control makes them great even if they are no big adventure on their own. Darts, fishing, hammer throwing: these are the best. It’s a bit like Wii, as graphics are not the most important. Another bonus that comes with the motion sensor is that there is a wallpaper that displays a screen half full of water that sparkles upwards. As we rotate the phone the liquid’s position changes.
