MWC2009: HTC Touch Pro2 in our hands

Hirdetés

The expo has been almost closed when we've observed that we have no photos of HTC Touch Pro2, as it hasn't been exposed at the company's stand. So we've went near the fountain and not in order to have a bath, but because the company had a kind of VIP complex over there.

We've entered and Eric Lin welcomed us at the reception and after changing business cards he listened to what we would like to know and then he took a handset out of his bag and invited us into the lounge in order to test the phone. As I haven't been to the Microsoft press conference and I didn't have much information about the handset I didn't know what to expect. It's a sure thing that the new device isn't small, as it weighs 175 grams and it's size is 116 x 59.2 x 17.3 mm and we get a Pocket PC with a sliding QWERTY keyboard and a 3.6", 480 x 800 pixels large display, currently running Windows Mobile 6.1, but as soon as 6.5 is launched a free upgrade will be available.

The hardware isn't much different than the predecessor's, its CPU is a 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7200A, it has 288 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM, while the storage space is provided by the microSD memory card. All data communication protocols are supported, we can browse the web through GPRS, EDGE, UMTS or HSDPA, which has a speed of 7.2 Mbps. If this wouldn't be enough we have WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 and a built-in GPS receiver for navigation. It's important to note that the keyboard is such a high-quality one that we have never seen before: the keys are finally not on the same plane, they have a great pressure point and the layout is like on a "normal" keyboard. The original Touch Pro didn't have such a tilting display like Kaiser, but the new phone has one. The camera won't astonish us with huge numbers, since this is a business model; its resolution is 3.1 megapixels and it has autofocus.

HTC is known for putting small treats in their handsets. These are not displayed on the specs sheet, but we will be grateful for them during everyday use. Of course Touch Pro2 also has such features and we have noticed a couple of them - or if we didn't then Mr. Lin showed them. After booting we fortunately didn't see anything of the default Windows Today screen, as the handset has the latest version of HTC TouchFLO 3D and it's even rather fast. We have immediately spotted that they have improved the scrolling routine and I can say that it's as good as on the iPhone. A great new phonebook is available, we finally don't have to rely on Outlook's plain contact list, but there is a nicely designed thing with pictures and large buttons that are easy to use with a finger. The messaging par has unfortunately remained unchanged (this is a limitation from Microsoft), but TouchFLO has a new tab, which has been highly anticipated: calendar. Finally we can access and overview our tasks at one place. The virtual keyboard is also new, but this doesn't have much to do with this model, but it's important for Touch Diamond2.

An additional useful update has appeared at the handsfree. The new Touch Pro2, thanks to its bulit-in gyroscope and light sensor, it knows if we put it upside down on a table during a conversation and the handsfree is automaitcally activated. We could only test sound quality during music playback, the dual speakers do a great job, so we think that there will be no problems during conversations either. Another useful new functions is that there is a microphone mute button on the back, so if we'd like to discuss something sensitive with our business partners we just have to press that button. Another great thing is the zoom bar under the display, which can be used for easy zooming in supported applications (Outlook, Opera, image browser) - without multitouch.
