Touch Max has been displayed at HTC's stand in Barcelona without any fuss. The handset is evidently a successor of Touch HD, based on its design, but on the inside it's completely unique, as this is the first handset that supports GSM and WiMAX networks too.
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) has been announced by the WiMAX Forum in 2001 in order to support IEEE 802.16, which means the cooperation and interoperability with the WirelessMAN standard. The Forum describes WiMAX as such a standardized technology, which can be a wireless alternative to CATV and DSL internet services. The basic idea is that it should be an alternative to both broadband mobile networks and WiFi routers, as WiMAX networks, just like WiFi, operate on the 2.4 GHz frequency, but the hotspots have a much larger range than standard WiFi routers, and they also make up a chain, so the whole system works similarly to GSM: if a user enters the range of a different WiMAX tower, data transfer is not interrupted.
TouchMax, besides having a triband GSM module (900/1800/1900 MHz), also supports WiMAX. It's operating system is Windows Mobile 6.1, while it's heart is a 528 MHz Qualcomm ESM7206A CPU, which works along with 256 MB RAM and 288 MB ROM. We can use the onboard 8 gigabytes of memory for storing data, and this can be expanded with a microSD card. The HTC engineers didn't play around much with the display, it has a diagonal of 3.8" and a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. Other features are WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, gyroscope, light sensor, FM radio and a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera. We don't know how long can the 1500 mAh battery keep the 113.5 x 63.1 x 13.9 mm large monstrosity (with a weight of 151 grams) alive.
