At the Acer press event we had to watch long financial presentations, but after them the announcement has been made, they have been talking about eight models, but only four of these will be available in the near future. With the acquisition of E-TEN, the IT giant has entered the market of smartphones and of course we could only hear the advantages of the fusion. The press kit we received at the conference had only a slight amount of information, but we try to put together something useful from these bits and pieces. All Acer models have Windows Mobile and at the press conference they have told that on one hand upgrade to WM 6.5 will be supported, and on the other hand Acer is not planning to create phones based on a different platform, even though they have strongly stressed the word "currently".
The first piece of the Tempo series is M900, the development of which has been started under the name E-TEN, but Acer finished it up. The handset supports HSDPA, it has a 5 megapixel camera, features a 3.8" display, on its side it has a sliding QWERTY keyboard and it has a GPS antenna as well.
F900 currently seems to be the keyboardless pair of M900, but this model is focused on web browsing, by trying to create such an interface that allows the display of the most infomration possible on the screen without overcrowding it.
X960 will possibly be a cheaper model, it has a youthful design and music playback is its main strength, besides of course also supporting HSDPA. The phone will have a widget-based user interface, the display's diagonal is 2.8" and it also features a GPS.
The possibly most daring device (also started by E-TEN) is the dual-SIM DX900, where the only question will be the battery's uptime. This model functions not only on GSM, but HSDPA networks as well, which means that there are theoretically four antennas inside, but it might be that data transfer is enabled only on the main SIM card, thus omitting one antenna. This wouldn't be a surprise, as besides these they had to cram the WLAN, the GPS and the Bluetooth antenna inside as well. The special device will have an estimated price of about 450 euros.
