Apple's partner, Foxconn, has started the mass production of 3G S-looking models that feature 3G, but have no WLAN module, these being targeted at China. After the long hassle it seems that Apple's phone will finally be launched in China as well, this being in China Telecommunication Technology Labs, awaiting official approval. It is not yet known which network operator will launch the handset, but it probably won't be China Mobile, as they have the Chinese TD-SCDMA 3G network instead of HSDPA.
