Sony Ericsson C702 - Cyber-GPS

Camera

So we have arrived at one of the main features of C702, the camera. The 3.2 megapixel lens with autofocus is nothing new from the manufacturer, K810i has the same parameters, but our current subject lacks the xenon flash, it uses a simple LED solution, although it has two of these. After sliding the lock the camera software starts up immediately, backlighting of hotkeys is lit up on the keypad and the viewfinder displays picture in a few seconds.

Unfortunately there is no BestPic function this time, but we have face recognition instead. This has to be turned on separately and then the software tries to recognize human faces while using the viewfinder. If it finds one, than it draws a white frame around it and focuses on it when we make an exposure. My experience shows that it functions fairly well, it can come handy if a person is on the edge of the picture and so the camera focuses there, not in the center.

Other menu items and settings don’t bring about anything new. There are preset environmental profiles, we can set picture size and quality, the type of focus (we have macro mode here), we can also chose from preset lighting profiles and we can turn of geo-tagging (the function that saves our current GPS position on the picture), as the device is capable of this too. This is can be used for reviewing pictures with Google Maps and we can see where a specific picture was taken.

Unfortunately the pictures are not good at all. There’s no way to praise them, they were noisy and blurred at the same time, no matter how much I have been tinkering with the settings, even in a clear, bright weather. To top it all, the photos are pale, as if there has been a constant fog when taking them. There is a PhotoFix feature in the phone, which is meant to correct the pictures somewhat, but this didn’t help either. There are some test pics below:

After these I have taken a picture in a darker environment (on the left) and tried enhancing it with PhotoFix, the result is on the right. It looks very much that the software cannot do any more than altering brightness and contrast, but I too can do these with any photo software.

We can take panorama photos too, this function joins three pictures in one, there is an example below, but unfortunately the photo margins are visible: the resulting picture is darker there.

Videos are recorded at 320 x 240 pixel resolution; I tried this one too, you can download the result by clicking here, it’s approx. 2MB large. As a conclusion, the camera is a disappointment. Of course we can always say that the model that’s going to be sold in the stores will be better, they will fix things, enhance it here and there, but we had no examples of such miraculous revivals, C702 probably won’t be capable of much more than this.
