There is a five megapixel camera on the back, it has autofocus and a small flash. We can take pictures horizontally, but strangely there’s no macro mode, but close-up pictures are still sharp. It’s a bigger problem that the software is incredibly slow, the viewfinder lags and there are problems with focusing as well, we have to wait a couple of seconds after pressing the shoot key to have the image ready. After this VE66 still needs some time to save it…
The list of options has the usual things, we can set image resolution, environmental modes, flash and self-timer, there are some effects, and that’s about it. When taking a look at the pictures we can say that we haven’t taken such terrible pictures with any other 5 megapixel phone. I don’t think I should describe every problem, practically the photos are awful from every point of view besides focus. Here they are, they get enlarged on clicking so you can throw up.
There are some interesting things on the musical part. The media search in the multimedia menu automatically collects and categorizes images and music, which can be grouped by artist, so it’s quite advanced. Unfortunately I’ve seen the problem that when I’ve inserted a memory card full of music, I’ve started playback from the file manager and this killed the software as it had no time analyzing the card’s contents. I couldn’t go back to the player, the tracks came one after the other, the only thing that solved the bug was a restart. If we have the patience to wait for the indexing to finish, we’ll have no problems.
Unfortunately there’s no equalizer, but we can rate tracks with little stars, and this creates a new way of organizing them. The player can display album covers, there is a real-time spectrum-analyzer, it can run in the background and we can fast forward the tracks with the center key. Sound quality is extremely good on handsfree, it’s even better than on the recently reviewed C510, even though we’ve been praising the musical capabilities over there as well. The headset has a record button, it cannot be taken apart, it does what it has to, but it’s nothing special.
The greatest surprise is the FM radio. This works without a headset, Motorola’s engineers have hidden an FM antenna under the case, and it even supports RDS. We haven’t really seen many phones that have their radio work without a headset, or at least not at this size.
