Multimedia
W902 – just like most newer Sony Ericsson phones – has a multimedia menu. This is where we have all the services that are filed under the multimedia category, relating to photography, music playback and games. W902 has a gyroscope, so here the displayed image rotates as we tilt the phone.
The camera has a resolution of five megapixels. In spite of being a Walkman handset, it still has autofocus, which hasn’t been implemented in recent Sony Ericsson musical phones. I suspect that even they would have felt five megapixels very lame with fix focus, so they had no choice: they’ve given us this feature, hooray. It has a real impact on image quality, it clearly takes at least as good photos as G900.
The list of options during photography is quite long, we have BestPic, panorama mode, all kinds of preset environmental profiles, effects, frames. This lens also goes dead in darkness, as the flash near the camera is good for a weak flashlight, but it can’t produce enough light even in a small room. We can observe a bit too much noise filtering on the pictures, but this is about one could expect from a 5 megapixel phone that’s not a dedicated photo machine. We can record videos at QVGA (240 x 320) resolution.
There will be no problems with music. The headset can be taken apart, so we can use our own. Members of the wireless movement will enjoy music through stereo Bluetooth. The software is okay, it’s the same as on W980 for example, it doesn’t have many bugs, instead of MegaBass we now have Clear Bass, and besides a couple of presets we can create manual equalizer settings as well.
There is an FM radio as well, bringing the usual quality and RDS support. The test phone had three games, besides Need for Speed and JewelQuest2 we had a yet unknown application, which is called FMX III. As I had no idea what the hell can this be, I’ve launched it curiously to see a motocross game, which is rather nice.
