Before the official launch of iPhone 3G S there were a couple of spy pics available which have shown a handset with a matte back panel. The official edition, however, has the shiny back that is much easier to scratch, this being a disappointment for many users. The models on the spy pics and the labels and IDs on the handsets from the FCC website are strangely the same, so the matte handsets really did exist. It is not yet known why the first prototypes were made of a different material and it's also possible that later on different editions will be launched as well.
