Qualcomm has announced that they are giving up the development of their own 4G solution, UMB, and they are concentrating on LTE solutions. UMB didn't turn out to be successful after a long period of time, since LTE proved to be a more attractive alternative for the largest network operators. The manufacturer wants to make LTE solutions available for mobile phones and smaller PCs in the future, so most of the engineers working on UMB will be required, so no hue lay-offs are expected. The Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, coming in the first half of 2009, will provide high-speed LTE network access, primarily for netbooks and MIDs. According to an analysis from the manufacutrer, about 1.2-1.4 billion mobile phones are going to be sold next year, which means a really large market for the company itself. As an effect of the announcement, the share quotation of Qualcomm has risen by 6.9%.
