Stepping out from the laboratories, LG and Nortel are testing the high-speed network of the future, LTE, in a realistic environment, on real networks. These exterior tests are highly important, since the new solution has to provide high-speed data transfer not only in the laboratory, but also in a real environment, filled with natural obstacles and environmental hazards, and it has to operate securely at high speeds. Engineers of Nortel and LG have managed to watch HD streaming videos without any lagging at a speed of 100 km/h. The first tests have proven that LTE can work just as reliably like GSM or 3G (UMTS, HSDPA, HSPA), but it has a higher bandwith and shorter response time. During the LTE tests Nortel's eNodeB base stations and ATCA-based gateways and LG's 3GPP (Rel.8.)-compatible terminals have been used. The first final Nortel LTE network solutions are expected to become available for network operators from 2009.
