Air France has experimentally made email and text message transfer available for their passengers from December 2007 at a height of 10.000 meters. Although the service is still in its testing period, starting from April 2. phone calls can also be made on some Airbus A318 flights. Thanks to the picocell technology, 12 calls can be active at the same time inside a cell, but email and SMS transfers are unlimited. There is no need of special registration for the use of the service, as the cell phone sees the on-board network as a roaming network, just like as if we were abroad. Data transfer and call costs are not yet known, but it's good to know that in the skies the EU roaming tariffs are not valid and costs can fly just as high as the Airbus A318.
