Sony Ericsson S302 - renamed French

Can one sell a phone twice under different names? Even if they're launched at the same time?

Foreword, exterior

Well, this hasn’t happened before. We’ve received two Sony Ericsson phones at the same time (me and my colleague, Bog), the only difference between them has been only a letter at first glance: he took the W302, I had S302. We’ve been talking the other day about them as we’ve both observed that there are lots of small changes in the menu system. And so does the great conclusion has been born: there’s Sagem’s hand in this! The W302 review came out a couple of days earlier, and now it’s my job to write the same thing again… as there are only a couple of minor differences between the two handsets, as a matter of fact we’re talking about a renamed product, it’s a bit like meat after the expiry date, but it’s not exactly that.

Sony Ericsson S302

So, it’s Sony Ericsson S302. S for Snapshot, so does the manufacturer say, S like shitty camera, so do I say, and this has been the less obscene version. It’s okay that there is the Cyber-shot series, which is the top of photography, but it’s not okay at all, that all end every handset has a fix focus camera, but let’s not hesitate about that right now. So the subject of this review is very closely related to the aforementioned W302, so their physical parameters are almost the same, this blue phone weighs 79 grams, and its size is 101 x 46 x 12 mm, so it’s not large at all. By the way there is a gray edition as well, which is rather silvery, due to the shiny front.

Yeah, the front side is shiny. Just as if it would have been lacquered, I say it looks really good, the last time I’ve seen such a thing was on E-TEN M810, I’ve been comparing to all kinds of Rolls Royce cars back then, this time I haven’t been amazed that much, but I’ve been satisfied with the overall image. Although no one could possibly think that the newcomer is a high-end phone, but it has a pretty good overall impression. It’s hard to capture on pictures what kind of blue is the real color, as its depth depends almost solely on environmental lightning. Sometimes it’s kind of techno-blue (wow, we’re trendy too), while at other times it’s not that dark, but the point is that it looks cool. The display’s diagonal is 2”, its resolution is 176 x 220 pixels, which hasn’t been good even a couple of years before, but today it’s really bad. I still say that the screen is really okay, the colors are beautiful and it’s easy to read in sunlight. On the bottom there are the buttons, the shapes of the main controls are a bit different than on the sister model, but the numerical keys are the same grains of rice, but their surface is a bit flatter. Typing a text message hasn’t been a great experience.

The back is made of a kind of semi-hard plastic, it’s black, so we can’t show off with the blue phone when making calls. I can’t say that it’s overburdened; there is only the camera on top with the flash and the handsfree speaker.

There is nothing on top, while on the bottom there is the notch used for taking the back off. On the right we can see the volume control keys and the camera’s orange exposure key, while on the left there is the play/pause key and the uncovered connector in which we have to plug the headset/charger. These were the two accessories inside the box which we received from XXL GSM.
