Sony Ericsson C510 - half smile

Since the phone is a Cyber-shot, we should take a closer look at the camera. C510 tries to be one of the cheapest member of Sony Ericsson’s camera-phone series (although its price doesn’t yet reflect this), so it has only a 3.2 megapixel image sensor, but it has autofocus and a double-flash (which is not Xenon). Videos can be recorded at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.

C510 is the phone where Sony Ericsson’s smile-detection algorithm is launched. This has to be activated separately, after this has been done nothing happens when we push the shoot key, but the phone starts “watching”. As soon as someone smiles on the setting (and since there’s face recognition as well, the heads are detected) the image is immediately taken. The phone is a bit too sensitive, as soon as someone opens his or her mouth, the image is taken, even if I say “ohh”.

The other features are the usual ones, we have macro mode, there are preset modes, color themes and a self timer. When taking a look at the pictures we can notice that C510 has a hard time automatically setting the white balance, lighter parts usually burn in (for example the sky), but noise filtering seems to be turned off, as darker parts are noisy, even in perfect lighting conditions. Still, the pictures are not bad, although I’d say that a Cyber-shot should be perfect.

The handset has PhotoDJ and VideoDJ, these can be used to perform some minimal editing on photos and videos. There is a gyroscope on the phone as well, so when viewing the pictures they are automatically rotated to match the phone’s orientation, and this feature is active in all multimedia apps, so images, videos and the music player all rotate automatically.
