Hardware, speed
In terms of hardware the new Asus PDA is practically better than any other one: its heart is a 624 MHz Marvell PXA930 CPU, which works with 128 MB RAM and 256 MB RAM – we have about 60-60 MB free for storing data and running programs. Before talking subjectively about speed, let’s have a look at the table with the usual benchmark results::
Pocket PC Mark v1.03 | VsBenchmark 2007 | ||
Dhrystone Benchmark (CPU) | 242.34 | Graphics | 3053 |
Whetstone Benchmark (CPU) | 8.83 | Others | 4723 |
Memory Benchmark | 1178.30 | JPEG | 5074 |
File system Benchmark | 559.06 | Games | 3317 |
Storage Cards | - | Sound | 200 |
Graphics Benchmark | 315.08 | Final | 3273 |
I think these are the kind of numbers about one would say they are impressive – at least when we want to sound very low-keyed. If we would want to let our feelings go, we might even mention some ohmyGods, and it’s true: in the present moment there are no better results than the one of P552W. I think it would be hard to say more than this, the little Asus is simply the best, the only poor results were at the sound test of VsBenchmark, but the others…
Of course benchmarks don’t always reflect reality – although they are good hints –, but fortunately there are no problems in everyday use, and even more, scrolling is a dream, it’s so smooth that it is a pleasure to keep looking at it. Programs launch without any animation, but in a very short time; I can’t say that it’s as fast as a Series 40 Nokia, but it’s the fastest Pocket PC. I think this fluency is not due only to the CPU, I presume that the manufacturer has spent a lot of time fine-tuning the machine.
