Accessories, exterior
There is a dumping of Pocket PCs. Practically a new handset comes every week, but fortunately most of these are not simple updates, we can find some real new features in them. The reason for this is that manufacturers recently – since the launch of iPhone – have realized that this operating system is not completely user-friendly by default, but this can be solved with a unique graphical interface and other small things. According to all signs HTC has managed to solve this task very well, Samsung has also made some improvements with Omnia, and now Asus has also joined the party, as P552W has a 3D-like GUI. We already had the handset for a short time in September, when it had really good impressions on us – and hopefully on our readers as well – so I’ve been opening the box with great expectations, which is so large that with a bit of exaggeration even I would fit inside. After this probably everyone has realized that there is no lack of accessories, we get a standard and a car charger, a data cable, a stereo headset, a car holder and a carry case with the phone.
The new guy has some nice physical parameters as well: it weighs 105 grams, its size is 60.5 x 102 x 14.5 mm. The materials used and the overall assembly quality are both OK, Asus machines usually have no problems in this matter. The plexi on the front is rather hard, but the plastic on the back is soft and silky to the touch, while on the sides there is a bit harder plastic stripe: this combination makes the handset have a very pleasant and firm grip. The display’s diagonal is 2.8”, QVGA resolution and quite low-quality, its brightness is rather low, the view angle is very small, as a matter of fact the colors are correct only when looking right in its center. A positive aspect is that it has no frame surrounding it, which makes it easy to control with a finger. On the bottom there are four buttons and a five-way d-pad, which is a really good one, it can be handled with one or two fingers (in case of games).
The back side might be a favorite choice for those who like minimal art: the whole thing is a large, plane rubber surface with twelve dots on it (the speaker) and a two megapixel camera, which is surrounded by a cool, metallic ornament. The whole back can be taken off in one piece, we just have to push it up. The SIM and microSD slots are both under the battery, so we have to turn the handset off in order to switch cards, which is a quite uncomfortable – read: lame – solution, I don’t understand why do manufacturers even think of doing such a thing.
On the bottom there is a standard miniUSB output, a large reset gap and the microphone. On the right we can see the camera’s exposure button, the keypad’s locking slider and the mid-sized stylus made of plastic. On the top there is only the power button, while on the left there is the external GPS antenna’s connector and the volume control keys. 3.5 mm jack output? None of that. No matter how cool does P552W look like, there are three serious design flaws: low-quality display, memory card under the battery and the lack of the standard headset output. Pity, what a pity.
