The Open Handset Alliance, clustered round the Google Androi operating system, has fourteen new members. The recently joined companies are AKM Semiconductor Inc., ARM, AUSTek Computer Inc., Atheros Communications, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin International Inc., Huawei Technologies, Omron Software Co. Ltd., Softbank Mobile Corporation, Sony Ericsson, Teleca AB, Toshiba Corporation and Vodafone. The most interesting of these is probably Sony Ericsson, who have been previously critizing the Android system, as it practically limits all services to Google. It is probably important for new members that thanks to the free operating system they can launch new products at lower development costs, which might be highly important in the increasing price-race. It is evidently important for Sony Ericsson to use a good touchscreen operating system, as they have abandoned UIQ and the unified Symbian is coming only much later.
