We can here everywhere that the future is in location-based services, so solutions of the future will be able to search or advertise based on the position of the owner. Currently the wide spreading of the technology has more boundaries. One could track the estimated position of a handset with the help of network radio towers if there is no GPS, but this would require a very precise database that is not available at all in many countries. Location-based services can be accessed with the help of special applications, which further slows the spreading of these services due to the presence of all kinds of operating systems. Google, however, has announced a completely new solution. There will be no need for special applications, but by the use of a plugin websites can automatically access the handset's position so for example hotel search sites can automatically find the nearest hotels. Google Gears Geolocation API can make the GPS or radio tower-supplied data available for any kind of site, but of course only if this is allowed. This service is currenltly available only for Windows Mobile handsets and the Internet Explorer browser, but later on it is expected to become availabel for many other platforms.
