The undeniable advantage of electronic ink based displays is that they need energy only for redrawing the displayed picture and they have just as much contrast as a printed newspaper page. Motorola F3 was the first cell phone to use an E-Ink display, which unfortunately didn't seem an ideal choice for a primary display at all. Japanese Cisco Hitachi Mobile Communications wants a completely different role for the recently announced E-Ink Vizplex Imaging Film display. On the external side of the Hitachi W61H clamshell, designed by the renowned Japanese designer, SeKiYuRiO, there is a 2.7" E-ink display, which can display calls and messages besides 96 different images and animations.
