The virtual keyboard for Google's Android platform, called "Cupcake", has been delayed quite a lot, but it finally looks to near completion. Omitting a standard keyboard is an increasingly frequent practice, which enables the creation of thinner handsets with larger displays. Omitting moving parts does not only decrease the number of possible errors, but it has a positive effect on assembly precision as well. The virtual keyboard, pictured below, cannot be installed yet on Android phones, but it can be test-drived in an emulator, a detailed manual being available at this link. Engadget already tried the keyboard and they have found everything all right, so we should expect soon a wave of Android mobiles made of a singel large touchscreen display.
