Yes, you suspect it right, that Sony Ericsson G700 practically has the same hardware as G900. This means that there is still only a 208 MHz CPU inside, which unfortunately cannot compete in speed with the competitors’ 369-624 MHz Symbian- or Windows-based devices. Sony Ericsson tried to compensate this flaw by designing a user interface that is comfortable to use and the most frequently used functions have to be launched only once, and then they can be recalled quickly from the memory.
Still, the processor – and I have to say this – is quite slow, outdated, oldschool. Even already P1i had the same, although it has some advantages: it uses less energy. Fortunately the user interface has been upgraded, as on the main screen we can go round the different categories, which show tabs that provide quick access to functions that are connected with these categories. Although there is a tiny little stylus in the top right corner of G700, but in most cases we won’t need it, as all functions can be controlled with the buttons or a finger.
The speed… if we disable animations in the menu, then the whole phone gets much faster, but a theme switch takes about half a minute, and newly opened applications need some time to start up. But since G700 doesn’t want to be a top model, and it is even cheap, this flaw can be looked over.
We have already described the phonebook, messaging and the calendar at the review of G900, so it would be unnecessary to repeat these features. The internal memory is still 160 MB large and it’s still completely dynamic, so the phonebook, the emails and the multimedia files are all stored here. The only game in G900 was Sudoku, but in G700 we can also find Sims2.
