Menu, basic functions

I’ve thought that the software of Philips handsets will be the same on every model, but the menu of the standby time-champion 9@9k has been completely different. We again have 3 x 3 icons in the main menu and we have three themes to customize their looks. I didn’t find any information about the possibility to install additional themes, but the three default ones are already quite different. We can also enable auto theme-switching and we can also set a list view instead of the default one with icons.

Customizability is taken to a high level. We can assign any feature to the four directions of the navigation keys, we have voice dialing, flight mode. The strange is that there is a quick menu we can edit, but this is not as quick as we would think, as it can be accessed only from the organizer menu. It is good, however, that the whole menu can be controlled with the numeric keys, and we cannot use only the OK key to access something, but the left-right keys can also be used in many cases.

The phonebook also has a couple of surprises. The capacity of 500 contacts is not too much, but it might be enough for an average customer. (I’ve received a mail from one of our reader just the other day about filling in the 1000 name capacity of his Nokia 6234 and he asked me what he should buy instead.) Lots of additional information can be stored in the contact list, but if don’t need the postal address for example we can disable it in the settings, affecting all contacts. Another pleasant minor feature is that after Alcatel and Nokia now Philips also supports assigning videos to contacts, so when they are calling we can see them waving at us with great enthusiasm.

I have been missing a basic email client from messaging, but Philips support only SMS and MMS messages. There are some strange things here, however. As a first thing every decent manufacturer managed to make words start with capital letters after typing a punctuation mark that ends a sentence, but there is no such feature here. The other problem is much more serious and it blocks users with a slower reaction time from typing messages. The thing is that the cursor changes very fast after typing a letter, itt happened a couple of times that instead of typing “BELA” I’ve managed to enter something like “AAEJKLA”, since the software didn’t wait for me at all, and if I don’t keep typing fast it instantly changes to the next letter.
