Where to now?
What does 2009 have in store for us? The spreading of touchscreen handsets will surely continue. If even Philips launches such a model, than it means that currently this is the most powerful trend. Multitouch might finally become in phones other than iPhone and Windows Mobile 7 might be a great push for this, but first we’ll have 6.5, which is more like a makeup for the current platform.
It already exists in East: Samsung phone with 10 megapixels
As for camera’s we’ll reach 10 megapixels in 2009, but I don’t know what meaning does this have besides giving something to naïve users to show off with. Anyway, Nokia has fallen behind a bit, everyone has been expecting an 8 megapixel camera in N97, but the Finnish top phone still seems to be a powerful beast.
N97 is coming up
I will again let master Polacheck do the talk about UMPCs: The UMPCs’ right for existence has been one of the most interesting questions this year. But there is still no answer. We have soon lots of great devices and lots of bad, fucked up concepts. Still, this year lots of cheap netbooks have been launched that are almost complete replacements for UMPCs, so we don’t really think that there is much left for this segment next year. Some models will probably stay an interesting trumpeter swan for lovers of touchscreen displays , but the UMPC won’t be able to compete with the cheapness and mass production of netbooks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see only a couple of new models being announced next year, and even those might have low sales.
The march of iPhone will carry on, even more if Apple will launch something in 2009 as well. Some rumors have started spreading about a cheaper model, but meanwhile the original iPhone software is evolving as well. The effect is felt on the results, Apple gained a reasonable market share on the market of smartphones (Symbian, Windows, OSX).
[+] Two SIM cards, touchscreen: Samsung D980
We’ve been expecting a lot from LG, they’ve tried a couple of directions this year, and I think they will have a great portfolio next year, based on their experience. Samsung’s road steamer seems to be unstoppable, we’re expecting dual-SIM handsets with powerful cameras and other nice features.
Motorola is currently in a very bad situation, we don’t’ expect any extras of them, it might happen that the mobile division will be sold next year. Maybe no one will follow them next year, but similarly to them, Sony Ericsson should also get itself together, we’re expecting an X2, maybe a new series along Walkman and Cyber-shot.
[+] It’s not the beauty that dominates: the first Android phone
It’s a big question how fast and in what direction will the Android system evolve. After the current single G1 many manufacturers have declared (like the previously mentioned Sony Ericsson) that they would like to create a handset based on this system. We can only encourage them, make the competition hard!
[+] Unique uptime: this little Philips stays online for weeks without being charged
As for the small manufacturers, Philips is one of our favorite, now not only I have such a phone, but Parci (our managing director) has also ordered one from abroad, and we are both very content with it. Besides the newly arrived Acer, the Gigabyte offensive is about to start as well, but Asus is not doing very much, they should launch something nice too.
