This topic is our hobbyhorse. Even more if we take a look at our region’s market, since nothing can be compared to iGO and Garmin. There has been a huge scandal when we told off the new Mio devices. For example I had a navi for testing and after writing the review I sent it back to the distributor who told me that they won’t even bring it to the country if it’s as bad as I wrote it. And then of course they still brought it in, so we’ll obtain one of those from somewhere else next time and we’ll do justice.

iGO 8
Hungarian success: 3D map on iGO8

Here only iGO and Garming have maps with 3D objects. That’s it. We might be joking with video navigation like Blaupunkt does, but this has no meaning without a normal map. Nokia is coming up, but I’d say that it will take at least two years until TeleAtlas and Navteq will be able to create maps with such high detail as the ones used by the two companies I’ve mentioned before.

My other hobbyhorse is the case of GPS devices without a software. I would frankly ban the sale of these products. Those who buy a PNA without a software probably won’t keep it on the shelf until a software magically appears on it, and I don’t really believe that they will obtain the program legally. This year there has been a raid when a couple of distributors have been caught installing hacked iGO8-s on CNS and other crappy handsets and they’ve been selling them that way.

Garmin nüvi 760
Simple and great – Garmin’s software

It is, however, sure that the current setup will be the same next year. Here no one can beat iGO and Garmin. Garmin will surely make improvements in 2009, they might really launch the java version of XT and the Nüvifone is also coming, which is mostly like a navi that is accidentally a phone too.
