Samsung: increasing sales, decreasing profit

Hirdetés

Samsung has published their report for the last quarter and just like many other companies they also had some serious fallbacks. The profit of the whole Samsung group has decreased from 2.14 trillion South-Korean wons (1.18 billion euros) to 1.22 trillion (672.2 million euros), which means a 43 percent drop. The mobile phone department is characterized by a strange duality: during the last quarter Samsung has shipped 51.8 million cell phones, which is a 13 percent increase compared to the second quarter and a 22 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The increase in sales made the incomes increase as well, but the profit has been dropping drastically this year. During the July-September period in 2008 the full profit of phone sales is 50 billion South-Korean wons (275.7 million euros), which is a 36 percent drop compared to the 79 billion (435.6 million euros) in the previous quarter and a 15 percent drop compared to the same period last year. The decrease in profit is no big surprise, as the average sale price per handset has dropped from 143 dollars to 135 dollars, which is a 5.6% drop. The Korean manufacturer is not pessimistic, as they have launched a couple of exciting new models and meanwhile they have sold 30 million of the cheap E250 musical phone. Samsung has a plan of selling 200 million handsets by the end of the year, which means a market share above 16%.
