Nokia 5800: Widget-based standby screen

The new features of the upcoming Nokia 5800 firmware have been revealed.

The user interface of the Finnish manufacturer's first Series 60 Touch handset had some serious flaws in terms of usability and comfort, compared to similar phones from rival companies even at the time of its launch, but since then, with the launch of LG's S-Class UI, the differences are even more striking. It's not that the more conservative Finnish menu system wouldn't offer splendid 3D animations that are a great way to reduce battery time, but the problem is that many parts of Series 60 5th Edition simply doesn't make use of the touchscreen and many features have to be accessed via the "options" submenu, even though the touchscreen display would allow for much simpler ways of use.

Nokia N97's widget-based user interface, even though it still doesn't seem to be perfectly stable, was a great leap towards modern user interfaces and it is rumored to be present on Nokia 5800's upcoming new software. Another new addition will be the kinetic scrolling routine, which had its debut in 5530, but there is no certain information about the community panel that presents information about up to 20 contacts. The new firmware, besides bringing lots of small bugfixes, enhances image quality and display handling, but the bit illogical use of simple- and double-clicks and the overcomplicated methods of selecting multiple items haven't been resolved yet.
